Green Planet Bottling: Eco-friendly Bottled Water

Green Planet Bottling is one of great business ideas with strong commitment to the environment. Glencoe entrepreneur Brad Schulman started this company in March 2008 for he’s deeply concerned not only about chemicals from the bottles leaching into the water, but also about the 40 million empty containers thrown away daily, cluttering landfills.

The product is a plant-based bioplastic bottle that is fully recyclable and compostable. When water heated to 170 degrees hits the bottle, it melts, returning to 100 percent virgin polymer. Current selling price ranges $1 to $1.29 for a 16.9-ounce bottle and it is available in 20 markets, including Chicago. Recent additions are 1-liter and 12-ounce bottles to natural foods stores. Soon, you can also get these bottles online.

Schulman has 12 workers and plans to generate $3 million to $4 million in sales this year. Green Planet Bottling initially shied away from retail to focus on hospitality and food service, figuring that the decision-makers in those segments were likely to see value in the product’s emphasis on sustainability.

The growing social concern over bottled water has slowed down the worldwide growth rate of bottled water 5 percent in 2008, according to an independent research group, the Worldwatch Institute.
